Best Ways to Find Work in Industrial Sales
There are countless industrial sales opportunities available and navigating through the maze of jobs to find the right fit can be a daunting task. Here are three tips that can help you in pursuing a career in industrial sales.
Start with job boards
Job boards will give you the widest perspective on what's available and you may even find some jobs you never thought about. In addition to the big three job boards (Monster, CareerBuilder, and Hot Jobs), search sites that focus on your particular industry or location.
There are literally thousands of sites in cyberspace. It is best to start with sites that are targeted towards industrial sales. Then widen the search. Once you are on the boards, learn to use "key word" searches. Experiment with combinations of words that describe you and what you are looking for (Use 2 or 3 words at most.). If you take the time to learn about the jobs you are applying for as well as the respective employer, it will help you greatly down the road.
Don't be afraid to network
Many employers will tell you that their best hires are referrals. Let your friends, relatives, and business associates know you are looking. Ask them if they know of companies that are hiring that might be a good fit. Ask them who they know who might be able to help you and see about getting referred to them. Follow up on those referrals and don't neglect to thank the person who referred you -- even if you don't get the job.
"Cold call" for the job you want
If you have identified a specific industry and type of sale, target those companies that fit your profile. At this point you are in fact engaging in outside sales by prospecting job opportunities in the hope of selling yourself. You do this by identifying your "customers," by introducing and marketing yourself (resume and cover letter), by setting an appointment and sharing your value proposition in person (interview). Follow-up is essential because normally getting hired requires a series of steps with a given employer. And unlike the previous methods that have been mentioned, the targeted employer might not have an opening. Proper follow-up will help ensure that the employer will think of you first when an opportunity surfaces.
