Distributors

Distributors normally function as middlemen between manufacturers and retailers or end users.  There can be a series of distributors, each moving the product down the line between the manufacturer and the end user.  This is referred to as a distribution channel and each organization or customer along the chain will have a specific need for the product.

Who does a distributor sell to in industrial sales?

A distributor may sell to any number of different types of customers.  A distributor in industrial sales may be selling to the manufacturer, to someone along the distribution chain or to the actual end user.  The type of industrial sales experience will vary depending on the types of customers.

Differences Between Industrial Sales Distributors, Wholesalers and Sales Agents

Industrial sales includes the following types of opportunities:

  • DISTRIBUTOR: an individual or company that buys in bulk, has the actual stock on hand and distributes or sells to the end user.  A distributor needs to be able to stock products for lengthy periods, usually requires large investment in capital, and sells at margins that can make the most profit.
  • WHOLESALER: Typically a company that buys in bulk and has the actual stock on hand, but only sells in bulk to other companies including retailers.  Because wholesalers need to be able to stock products for lengthy periods, they usually require large investment in capital.  Wholesalers also have the opportunity to make large profits.
  • SALES AGENT: An individual or company that buys and sells in bulk, but has little if any physical stock of products. These opportunities usually require significantly less capital investment, and tend to be commissions-driven versus profit driven.
