Amp Mil Spec Connectors

Hi-Line brings the store to you!

AMP is a manufacturer of a wide range of terminals and connectors as well as a variety of electrical and electronic parts. In this discussion we will focus on AMP Mil-Spec terminals. Mil-Spec terminals are made to exacting standards put forth by the government. These specifications allow for uniformity from one manufacturer to another and insure very specific production and performance characteristics.

What are some of the AMP terminals that are Mil-Spec?

Due to the limits of space here we cannot go into detail on all AMP terminals that meet the many Mil-Specs. Some of the most popular are listed below;

PIDG (Pre-Insulated Diamond Grip): PIDG is a pre-insulated terminal designed for complete and uniform reliability in the most difficult circuit environments. PIDG terminals consist of tin plated copper. PIDG terminals use nylon insulation for dielectric strength and are color coded to wire size. The basic terminal is constructed of a fine grade high conductivity copper per ASTM B-152 and tin plated per MIL-T-10727. PIDG ring terminals and splices meet or exceed the requirements of MIL-T-7928, type II, Class 1 and 2.

TERMINYL: Designed to provide insulated terminals and splices for large wire sizes, many of which are used in air-borne and ground support application. TERMINYL electrical connectors are designed and engineered to successfully withstand extreme vibration, shock and structural stresses, elevated temperatures and other conditions, which can adversely affect the critical circuit requirements in complex air and space flight equipment. The basic terminal material is constructed of fine grade high conductivity copper per ASTM-B-152 and tin plated per MIL-T-10727. The terminals use nylon insulation for dielectric strength and are color coded to wire size.

SOLISTRAND: Solistrand are un-insulated terminals and splices specially designed to terminate solid and stranded wire, irregular shaped conductors, and combination of these while still retaining the superior performance characteristics of single purpose terminals and splices. Solistrand terminals meet or exceed the requirements of MIL-T-7938, Type I, Class 1 and 2. The basic terminal is constructed of fine grade high conductivity copper per ASTM B-152 and tin plated per MIL-T-10727. Solistrand terminals incorporate a seam that is completely closed and brazed for uniform metal strength around the entire barrel area.

Who uses MIL-SPEC terminals?

Of course, Mil-Spec terminals were originally developed and then specified for military applications. All military branches use Mil-Specs to insure they are getting products meeting their exact application criteria. Many other industries as well as Government and non-governmental entities have adopted Mil-Spec classifications in their design requirements as a way to insure uniformity and safety in critical applications. Among these groups are Aviation companies building aircraft and associated sub-assemblies. Nuclear power plants and NASA also use Mil-Spec products extensively in manufacturing and repair. Many state and local agencies also use Mil-Spec products in everything from transportation equipment to communication systems.

What specific MIL-SPEC's do AMP terminals fall under?

MIL-T-7928, Class 1 and Class 2 Military Approvals:

Class 1 terminals must comply with the dimensional requirements specified by the military. Tooling must conform to the militarys dimensional and performance specification. They are for procurement by government agencies for maintenance and repair.

Class 2 terminals must comply with the dimensional requirements specified by the manufacturers customer drawing. For field repair purposes Class 2 terminals must be capable of being replaced by Class 1 Terminals. Tooling must meet the manufacturers recommended application tooling. Class 2 terminals are for procurement by contractors and manufacturers for high volume production, modification and repair.

Specific PIDG terminals fall under MS-25036, M7928/1 M7928/4, M7938/5, M7938/6 and MS-17143 for dimensional requirements.

Specific TERMINIL terminals fall under MS-25036 for dimensional requirements.

Specific SOLISTRAND terminals fall under MS-20659 and M7928/7 for dimensional requirements.
