A battery is a device that stores electrical energy chemically. This is accomplished by using a combination of galvanic cells. The cells create a voltage difference. This energy is stored until an electrical circuit is attached to the battery. At that time the battery sends it's electric current through the circuit.
What Types of Batteries are available?
Basically there are two types of batteries. Primary batteries are one-time use batteries. Once the supply of reactants is exhausted no more energy can be stored and the battery is no longer useful. Secondary batteries can be recharged. This is, they can have their chemical reactants "re-charged" by supplying electrical energy to the cells.
What are the different types of Primary and Secondary Batteries?
One time use or "primary" batteries are disposable batteries. The most common types are Zinc-carbon and Alkaline batteries. Secondary batteries or rechargeable batteries have gone through a rapid progression over the last hundred years. The oldest is the lead-acid battery commonly used in automobile applications. There are several types of "dry-cell" rechargeable batteries available today. In order of efficiency are nickel-cadmium, nickel metal hydride and lithium-ion batteries. In the last several years the lithium-ion has proven to be the most popular of the rechargeable batteries holding the majority of the commercial market.
What are the most common sizes of commercial batteries?
In common use for commercial electronics several sizes of batteries are the most popular. These sizes, starting with the smallest are button or watch batteries then the "A" designated batteries. 4A (AAAA), 3A (AAA) and double A (AA). The "C" battery is the next size up followed by the "D" cell. These letter-designated batteries are all round batteries with the negative and positive connections on opposite ends. Then you have the 9-volt and the 6-volt (commonly referred to as a lantern battery). Both of these types of batteries are the positive and negative connections on the top of the battery and are rectangular in shape.
