Blind Rivets

Hi-Line brings the store to you!

What are Blind Rivets?

Blind rivets are called blind because you only have to have access to one side. This is unlike the original bucking style rivets. Both styles of rivets are used to bind two work pieces together. Blind rivets are often referred to as POP rivets. This is a brand name being used generically.

A blind rivet consists of a body and a mandrel or nail. They may are may not be made of the same material depending on the application.

Selection criteria of Blind Rivets

To properly select a blind rivet you need to go through the below factors:

  • Diameter — the size of the hole
  • Material thickness — the grip range of the rivet must be in the range of the thickness of your two pieces being bound
  • Strength — select a style of rivet with the shear and tensile strength that will more than adequately fill the requirements of your joint
  • Material — Along with the strength, corrosion and galvanic reactions may need to be considered.
  • Head style — Dome heads are considered the most common but a flanged head could be required for your work piece or often countersunk styles are require
  • Specifications — Military, FAA etc. specifications and certifications may need to be met

How do you install a blind rivet?

To install a blind rivet, insert the body of the rivet into your hole of both pieces to be joined. Using the correct rivet tool and noise piece, grip the mandrel and pull the grips of the tool together. The tool pulls the mandrel through the body, deforming the rivet's body allowing the rivet to grip the work piece while breaking off the excess of the mandrel.
