What is a Clevis Pin?

A Clevis is a coupler shaped like the letter U with holes through each end so a clevis pin can pass through the holes to connect the open end. This then takes a form of a D. A cotter pin is inserted through the holes of the clevis pin to keep the clevis pin in place after assembly of the parts to be fastened.

What do you measure on a Clevis Pin?

To measure a clevis pin properly, you should measure its:

  • Length — from underneath the head to the end of the tip of the pin.
  • Effective Length — from under head to the edge of the hole closest to the head. –Also known as grip length.
  • Overall Length — Total length of the pin from the top of the head to the opposite end.
  • Diameter — the diameter of the shank (between the head & the point).
  • What is a Clevis pin made out of?

You can make a clevis pin out of any material, most commonly the same material as the clevis is made of. It is common to see clevis pins made from plated steels and stainless steels.
