What are cotter pins?

Cotter pins (also known as a cotter key or a split pin) are metal fasteners with two prongs that are inserted through corresponding holes in machined parts such as a clevis pin. Then the prongs are bent to hold the part in place. They are typically made of steel, stainless, brass, monel, copper or aluminum wire with a half-circular cross section. Cotter pins come in multiple sizes and types.

What are the most common types of cotter pins?

The most common cotter pins are: Extended Prong, Chisel Point & the Hammerlok. The Hammerlock is designed to be used with castlenuts to speed assembly. In England a cotter pin is a part of a bicycle and split pin is the typical name for a U.S. cotter pin.

How do you measure a cotter pin?

To measure a cotter pin, first think of its application. They have to fit through a hole, so what is its diameter (A — round side to round side). Technically the diameter is the thickness of one prong (B) times two. So, be sure you measure the diameter of the two prongs pressed close together & from rounded side to rounded side. Next, the length (L) is measured from where it sets in the hole to the short prong.
