What respirator will help protect me against the swine flu -influenza A (H1N1)?

PER the CDC: Recent CDC infection control guidance documents provide recommendations that healthcare workers protect themselves from diseases potentially spread through the air (such as SARS or tuberculosis) by wearing a fit tested respirator at least as protective as a NIOSH-approved N95 respirator.

Per the FDA: Personal protective equipment (PPE) is any type of facemask, glove, or clothing that acts as a barrier between infectious materials and the skin, mouth, nose, or eyes (mucous membranes). When used properly, personal protective equipment can help prevent the spread of infection from one person to another.

During a flu outbreak, government agencies may recommend that you protect yourself from infection by using a facemask, N95 respirator, or other type of equipment. The information on the following website will help you learn the difference between facemasks and respirators, and will give you information about how to use these and other types of personal protective equipment.

What is a N95 respirator?

An N95-level respirator is at least 95% efficient when tested against sodium chloride (salt), and is used for solid and non-oil based particles. Applications include grinding, sanding, bagging and general processing of various minerals and other substances that do not contain oil.

Per the CDC: An N95 respirator is one of nine types of disposable particulate respirators. Particulate respirators are also known as "air-purifying respirators" because they protect by filtering particles out of the air you breathe. Workers can wear any one of the particulate respirators for protection against diseases spread through the air - if they are NIOSH approved and if they have been properly fit tested and maintained. NIOSH approved disposable respirators are marked with the manufacturer's name, the part number (P/N), the protection provided by the filter (e.g. N95), and "NIOSH." http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/npptl/topics/respirators/disp_part/n95list1.html

Can you suggest a good "basic" N95 respirator?

A good "basic" N95 respirator is the 3M™ Particulate Respirator 8210, N95 NIOSH approved (HI-Line # DMS10). This respirator is designed to provide comfortable, reliable worker protection against certain non-oil based particles. Lightweight construction promotes worker acceptance and comfort and increased wear time. Workplace applications also include grinding, sanding, sweeping, bagging and other dusty operations.
