Nuts are the threaded devices that apply tension to some type of fastener, typically a bolt. The advantage to a nut over a weld is it can be removed or reused and it can be tightened to specific tension levels. Nuts can be made from almost any material. A childs toys may be made from wood or plastic and have threaded nuts for bolts. Typical nuts are made of metal and have different grades or strengths. If chemicals or corrosive materials are involved nuts could be made of plastic, stainless steel or other materials not affected by those elements. Nuts are typically used with washers, lock washers and bolts or screws.

What types of nuts are available?
There is an endless list of types of nuts. They can be hidden in furniture frames to be anesthetically pleasing or bold and strong to hold structures like a bridge together. They can be used to keep the rims and tires attached to your automobile or fasten a transmission to an engine. Some of the more common nuts are:
- Graded Nuts (2, 5 or 8)
- Threaded nuts (U.S.S., SAE or Metric)
- Self-locking nuts
- Grade C nuts
- Castle or Slotted nuts
- Jam nuts
- Flanged nuts
- Serrated Nuts
- Wing Nuts
- Acorn Nuts
- Kep Nuts
How are nuts applied?
Nuts are typically twisted onto threads of a post, bolt or threaded rod of some sort. As the nut is twisted or rotated onto the threads it will tighten or cause clamping or securing of the materials being fastened together. Most of the time a wrench of some sort will be used to tighten the nut. A torque-wrench can be used to apply a specific tension to a nut.
How do nuts stay tight and not loosen?
Nuts are typically used with a lock washer. Lock washers typically have some type of spring-tensioned tab that cuts into the nut and material being fastened to keep the nut from losing tension. Lock nuts can have nylon or other material built into them that bind to the threads and keep it from loosening. Castle nuts have slots so a wire or cotter pin can be applied and keep the nut from spinning or loosening. There are also many chemical compounds that can be applied to the threads that will act like a glue and keep the nut from loosening. One of the most common ways to keep a nut tight is to use a jam nut, a second nut on top of the first and tighten it locking it to the first.
