What are other names for Roll Pins?

For many applications engineers will choose to use a retaining pin. Other common names for roll pins are: self-retaining pins, retaining pins, solid pins, dowel pins, spring pins, slotted pins and coiled spring pins. Spring pins and coiled spring pins are a sub-set of roll pins with advantages.

Spring Pins

What are the advantages of Spring Pins? In heavy-duty applications, a solid pin's inflexibility can cause the hole to elongate under load as where a heat-treated spring pin can be as strong as a solid pin while its flexibility can add additional life to the assembly.

Coil Spring Pins

Which style of Spring Pins are best? A slotted spring pin, under load, has the stress concentrated on the 180 degrees opposite the slot. A coiled spring pin or coiled pin is the most capable of the pins to absorb shock and vibration under load. This flexibility provides a longer useful life of the assembly.
