Set Screws

Hi-Line brings the store to you!

Set screws are a type of screw most often used to secure an object with in another object. Usually it is fully threaded without an external head. They are referred to as "blind head", meaning the drive is internal (grub) like a Hex, Allen, slot, Torx or Phillips key drivers. The Set Screw passes through a threaded hole and is tightened against an inner object to prevent it from moving relative to each other.

How do Set Screws work?

Set Screws typically would go through a threaded hole in a pulley and apply pressure to the shaft. This works well keeping the pulley and shaft aligned under light loads. For heaver uses to keep the shaft and pulley from slipping a hole or flat may be machined or drilled allowing the set screw to put more pressure on a specific area. This allows less chance of slipping at the Set Screw. The hole or flat needs to be precisely aligned.

What type of drive head or drive points are most common in Set Screws?

Set Screws have internal drive style. The usually go through a threaded hole and the driver needs to fit inside that hole. Some common drives are:

  • Allen (hex)
  • Square head
  • Slotted
  • Bristol spline

What type of points do Set Screws have?

Set Screws have many styles of points allowing varying degrees of leverage. The more secure the pulley and shaft the less likely of slippage. Common Set Screw points are:

  • Flat Point
  • Domed Point
  • Cone Point
  • Cup Point
  • Knurled Cup point
  • Extended point
  • Pilot point
  • Dog point

The cup point is considered the most reliable offering resistance to wear while maintaining a strong grip.
