Switches

Hi-Line brings the store to you!

Switches contain moveable and stationary contacts. When a moveable contact connects with a stationary contact a circuit is complete allowing electricity to flow. Opening and closing and diverting electricity from one place to another within a circuit creates a path for electrical currents to move or flow.

What are Poles and Throws in Switches?

Switches have poles, which could be considered the charged or hot side and the throw, which is where the power is being directed. A simple on-off switch is a single pole, single throw switch. These are referred to as a SPST. A switch that has one contact or hot pole and two different circuits that are completed when the switch is used is a single pole double throw or SPDT. A switch device that has two energized poles that complete a single throw is referred to as a DPST or double pole single throw. If there are two poles and two throws the letter designation is DPDT.

What is the difference in a Toggle and a Rocker Switch?

Toggle and Rocker switches can perform the same tasks. A toggle is designed with a lever that extends out from the switch allowing ease is throwing the switch any direction it is designed to go (see Poles and Throws). The lever can be designed in any length. Dust covers can be added to cover the lever to help keep out foreign particles. A Rocker switch takes up less space than the toggle. The rocker is designed like the bottom of a rocking chair where gentle pressure on one side or the other engages the pole to the throw. In some rockers a light can be added to the rocker to indicate when it is energized.

What is a momentary Switch?

Momentary switches turn a circuit on or off temporarily. Whether it be a rocker, toggle or any other type of switch it is actuated by holding or pressing the switch while needed then releasing it when it needs to stop. Starting your car is a momentary switch. When you turn the key (switch) you engage the started, when the car starts you release the key (ending the momentary circuit).
