Triangle Shank Drill Bits

Hi-Line brings the store to you!

Triangle Shank drill Bits are often referred to as 3-flat shank design. They are almost always built by machining three flats on round bar stock or a round drill bit, creating a triangular surface on the drill bit.

What is the benefit of a triangle shank drill bit?

Triangle Shank Drill bits are regular round shank bits that have been modified by creating 3 flat sides on the shank of the bit. The three flat sides allow a 3-jaw drill chuck to hold the bit more firmly not allowing the bit to turn in the chuck! This allows a higher torque transmission and is moderately accurate when centering a hole. Triangle shank bits are also less likely to twist in the chuck virtually eliminating burs caused by the bit twisting in the chuck!

Is Reduced Shank drill bits available in the Triangle Shank Drill Bit design?

Triangle Shank Drill bits do come in a reduced shank drill bit. A reduced shank drill bit is a bit that drills a hole larger than the drill chuck will handle. The bottom of the drill bit shank is reduced in diameter allowing it to fit the smaller chuck, allowing the smaller chuck or drill motor to use a larger bit. A reduced shank bit with three flats (Triangle Shank) allows the smaller drill to apply torque to the larger bit without slipping. This allows more opportunities for a smaller chuck or drill motor.

Is the Triangle Shank Drill bit the only bit that increases torque?

Triangle Shank Drill bits are the most common bit that increases torque but there are several other styles for different applications to consider, the most common other than the Triangle Shank Drill bit are:

Brace Shank-the brace shank drill bit was popular before 1850 and is still produced. It has a squared tapered shank that is pushed into a square hole in the chuck. This design allows fair torque without slippage.

Hex Shank-This bit is typical a five sided shank and is used in drill machinery (robotic and lathes) not hand held drill motors. It allows no slippage but requires special chucks and is for precision drilling.
