How are Woodruff keys used?
When installed, a Woodruff key extends past the surface of the shaft, leaving a protruding tab sticking up. This tab mates with a matching slot on a device mounted flush upon a shaft — such as found on a pulley or gear. This prevents the pulley from freely rotating about the shaft.
